New details about the death of Deadliest Catch star Todd Meadows have emerged.
The 25-year-old deckhand who worked on a vessel featured in the reality television fishing series, died after falling overboard in the Bering Sea, according to the US Coast Guard.
Todd was working aboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady fishing vessel when the incident occurred on 25 February 2026. The rookie crew member had been part of the vessel’s team during filming connected to the long-running reality programme broadcast by the Discovery Channel.
Authorities said Meadows fell into the sea about 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor before being recovered by fellow crew members.
The incident is under investigation by the United States Coast Guard, which confirmed details of the recovery and the subsequent attempts to resuscitate him.
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said in a statement to the Daily Mail: “On February 25, 2026, at 5.05 PM local Alaska time, Coast Guard watchstanders at the Arctic District command centre in Juneau received notification from the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady, reporting that a crew member by the name of Todd Meadows fell overboard approximately 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor.
“He was recovered unresponsive by the crew approximately ten minutes later. First aid and attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful, and the crew transported the deceased to Dutch Harbor.
“The Coast Guard is currently investigating this situation. As the nation's leading marine safety organization, the Coast Guard investigates marine casualties and accidents to uncover their causes and initiate necessary corrective actions.”
Todd’s body was later transported to the Anchorage Medical Examiner’s office in Alaska on 27 February. An autopsy was performed before his body was released on 2 March.
The death was first publicly announced by Captain Rick Shelford, who appears on Deadliest Catch and captains the Aleutian Lady.
Writing in a Facebook tribute, Rick described the loss as a defining moment for the vessel.
Rick said the incident was “the most tragic day in the history” of the boat.
He added about Todd: “His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.
“Todd's love for his children, his family, and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him.”
Rick also said: “Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can't fully express.
“We ask that you lift Todd's children and family in prayer and keep them in your thoughts as they face the days ahead without him.”
Rick wrote: “Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him.
“Rest easy brother, till we meet again.”
A spokesperson for the Discovery Channel said in a statement to the Daily Mail: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows.
“This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
A fundraising page organised by Paige Knutson has also been set up to support Meadows’ family and his three young sons following his death.
The description on GoFundMe states: “We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Todd Morgan Meadows, a beloved 25-year-old father, son, brother and friend, who left us far too soon while doing what he loved – crabbing out on Alaskan waters.
“He was a determined dad to three amazing little boys who were his entire world. Everything he did was for them — their smiles, their futures, and the memories they will carry with them.”
The page adds: “This unimaginable loss has left his children without their father, his parents without their son, his siblings without their brother and his family broken.
“As the family navigates this heartbreaking time, we are raising funds to help support his three boys, assist with funeral expenses, and help ease the financial burden in the months ahead.
“Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward honoring his life and ensuring his boys are cared for in the way he would have wanted.”
