New Pokémon movie on the way
The film - Pokémon: Wild Card - is the first Pokémon movie to be released in seven years, and was announced during the closing ceremony at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco on Sunday night (30.08.26).

The film - Pokémon: Wild Card - is the first Pokémon movie to be released in seven years, and was announced during the closing ceremony at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco on Sunday night (30.08.26).
Tsunekazu Ishihara, Pokémon Company president and CEO, said at the event: “For the first time in seven years, a new Pokémon movie is on its way”.
According to IGN, Ishihara also said that the main character in the upcoming movie is a card game player who is “battling and striving to be a champion”.
Fans were treated to a glimpse of the player in a teaser which was shown on Sunday night, which also said that the film is “coming 2027 and beyond” - hinting that the movie could be the start of a film series.
The film is being directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, with characters designed by Akemi Hayashi.
It’s being produced by Story Inc., while CloverWorks in charge of the animation.
It will be the first Pokémon movie since Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle was released in 2020 in Japan.
The movie announcement is further proof that 2027 is going to be a big year for Pokémon, as a new series titled The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu is set to premiere on Disney Plus and DisneyXD.
A clip of the upcoming movie was also shared on the Pokémon Instagram page, alongside the caption: “Get ready for Pokémon: Wild Card, an all-new animated film featuring a Pokémon TCG player and Mimikyu!
“Stay tuned!”
