Dawn French is open to reviving comedy partnership with Jennifer Saunders
Dawn French has revealed that she and comedy partner Jennifer Saunders are always plotting new projects together.
Dawn French is constantly planning new projects with Jennifer Saunders.
The comedy duo starred together in the BBC sketch show French and Saunders from 1987 until 2005 and Dawn hasn't ruled out the prospect of a reunion.
The Vicar of Dibley star told My Weekly magazine: "Jennifer and I talk every year about what we could do. A sitcom? A comedy? Can we be bothered to write it? Should it be a documentary? Maybe we'll take the podcast (French and Saunders: T****** Around) on tour.
"We'd need five wigs and eight sets of teeth, as everything Jennifer and I have done has a big production value, even though it's just two fat old birds yapping at the end of the day."
Dawn added of her comedy partner: "She makes me laugh like no one else on earth.
"She knows my tickle button, knows the naughty things to say. We repeat things, exaggerate, make stories up about people, and gossip maliciously. We're basically just misbehaving. Jennifer is my delight."
French stars in the new BBC sitcom Can You Keep a Secret? as Debbie Fenton – who hatches a plan to claim her husband William's (Mark Heaps) life insurance when he is erroneously declared dead – but wasn't convinced about returning to the genre after the success of The Vicar of Dibley.
The 68-year-old star said: "I didn't want to do another sitcom.
"Good sitcoms are as rare as hen's teeth and I've already done one."
However, Dawn was ultimately drawn in by both the script and the chance to play such a "bossy" character.
The comedienne said: "She's absolutely convinced she's right all the time. She's one of the bossiest, most controlling people you could imagine, yet she's got a heart and a moral centre. It was delightful to play someone who's passive-aggressive – or just aggressive!"
Dawn added: "It's funny, but it's also about the dynamics of this oddball family that have almost accidentally pulled off a massive crime.
"It's an interesting hybrid, and I think that's also one of the things that attracted me to it because it is a sitcom, without a doubt, but it's also a thriller, and I think it's quite hard to achieve both those things."
