Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders are "very keen" to reunite on stage or screen.

For years, the comedy duo - who last appeared on the box together as judges on ITV's The Masked Singer on Boxing Day 2024 - have wondered whether it is worth writing a sitcom, or creating a documentary.

But Dawn and Jennifer - who are best known for their BBC sketch show French and Saunders - will only go through with a project if it has "value".

Speaking as part of an interview inside Good Housekeeping UK’s new Christmas TV Guide, Dawn admitted: "Jennifer and I talk every year about what we could do.

"A sitcom? A comedy? Can we be bothered to write it? Should it be a documentary? Maybe we’ll take the podcast on tour… But I’ve never seen a podcast on tour.

"We’d need five wigs and eight sets of teeth, as everything Jennifer and I have done has a big production value, even though it’s just two fat old birds yapping at the end of the day.

"Jennifer is very keen. I’m keen. I want to make sure whatever we do offers value for money. I will happily take any chance to spend time with Jennifer."

Dawn and Jennifer - who launched their French and Saunders: Titting About podcast in 2020 - first met at drama school in the 1970s.

And they have adored each other ever since.

Dawn gushed: "She makes me laugh like no one else on earth. She knows my tickle button, knows the naughty things to say.

"When we get together, we have a list of things we have to talk about that are pretty much the same things we talked about a couple of months earlier. We repeat things, exaggerate, make stories up about people, and gossip maliciously.

"We’re basically just misbehaving. Jennifer is my delight."

Dawn, 68, credits "time to experiment" and producers having "faith" in her and Jennifer, 67, to grow for the success of French and Saunders.

And Dawn thinks that rarely happens now, and the state of comedy today - with less money being invested in performers and writers - makes it harder for projects to be greenlit.

The Vicar of Dibley star explained: "I’m aware of mates with really good ideas who just can’t get their projects made. I’m not saying there’s no good comedy out there because there is.

"I love Would I Lie To You?. Sharon Horgan is fantastic. As is Aisling Bea. I like Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.

"There are plenty of young women pushing ahead; Jennifer’s daughter, Beattie Edmondson, is part of a gang called Birthday Girls, who are really funny. Perhaps I’m just not aware of what’s out there…”
