Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has revealed that "wedding bells" are in the future for characters Carla Connor and Lisa Swain.

The popular couple - dubbed "Swarla" by fans - have endured a complicated romantic journey so far after meeting, falling in love and getting engaged over the past year.

But their romance started to disintegrate following the shock arrival of Becky Swain, who kept Carla hostage in recent weeks.

Events came to a head in the special Corriedale crossover episode between Corrie and Emmerdale which aired on ITV on Monday night (05.01.25).

Characters from both soaps were caught up in a traffic pile-up after Debbie and Ronnie's wedding with Lisa's life in the balance at one point, but ended with DSI Swain putting Becky in handcuffs as she was stretchered into an ambulance following the crash.

In the wake of the crash, viewers have seen Carla (Alison King) questioning if she should reconcile with Lisa (Vicky Myers) and being left heartbroken by the revelation that Lisa and Becky slept together.

But despite the uncertainty surrounding "Swarla", Coronation Street boss Brooks has spilled that fans will see a "romantic spring" for the couple which will culminate in a wedding.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz and other media, Brooks said: "Wedding bells are certainly ringing in the not too distant future, and they’ll get their happy ever after."

Brooks also revealed that Coronation Street is to air a special “flashforward” episode which will reveal a main character will be killed on the cobbles.

She said: "This is something that’s been in the making for a really long time. There are five potential victims, and we will take the audience on a journey to try and figure out who that body is and what happened. It is a who have they done it to, not a whodunit.

“I don’t think I’ve ever told a story that involves quite as many character groups. Everyone’s impacted – everyone’s affected by this story. There’s so many twists and so many turns.”

The flashforward episode will show a Weatherfield resident being interviewed by the police after finding the dead body of an unidentified individual on the street.

Brooks added: “We understand what’s happened, we understand the context of what’s happened, but we don’t know who it’s happened to.”

Coronation Street airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 20:30 on ITV and streams on ITVX.
