Coronation Street's Alison King reveals nasty illness that left her 'struggling to breathe'
Coronation Street star Alison King struggled when filming scenes for her character Carla Connor's wedding to Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) because of a nasty illness.
Coronation Street's Alison King was left "struggling to breathe" and feeling "depressed" after she caught a chest infection from two child actors on the set of the ITV soap.
The actress battled lung and chest pains from severe coughing fits, with one making her fear she tore her intercostal muscle, while filming her character Carla Connor's wedding to Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers), which aired in April.
In a video posted on TikTok, Alison, 53, explained: "At the beginning of the year, my nervous system seemed to need rebalancing. I lost my mum last year, last August.
"And then at the beginning of this year, I got a chest infection from two of the gorgeous little babies at work.
"Actually, when we were filming the wedding, I had been coughing and coughing and coughing. My right lung was hurting, my chest was hurting anyway, it was sick of the coughing, it was inflamed. I could feel that.
"And then I was going upstairs, and I chewed on a Murray Mint, and I choked on it, and a really, really big cough came out, and I could feel tearing on my intercostal muscle."
Alison could not exercise for months because of her condition, which left her "really depressed" as she "put on loads of weight".
The soap star added: "Because of my nervous system and not doing anything, I was really struggling to breathe a full breath. I couldn’t swim, which I do all the time because that’s my therapy.
"I couldn't do anything."
Ever since her battle with the chest infection, Alison has had a twitch in her eye.
She said: "I think my nervous system has just, kind of, gone into a little bit of panic mode."
But now, the entertainer feels "good and happy", and said she has done reflexology and Reiki to help with her recovery.
It comes after it was reported that Alison and Vicky need extra security due to the popularity of their on-screen alter-egos, Weatherfield factory boss Carla, and police detective Lisa - the first lesbian couple to marry on Coronation Street.
A source told The Sun: "Ali and Vicky were filming alongside other Corrie stars including Tina O’Brien and Jack P Shepherd.
"But the group that turned up were only interested in Swarla. They waited outside all day until the shoot finished at 6.45pm.
"Alison and Vicky were ushered out by security guards into a waiting Mercedes people carrier. There was no time for selfies or autographs. But for the Swarla fans it didn’t matter, they are so hardcore just a glimpse is enough.
"Some fans turn up to watch the actors going in and out of the locations or the studios, and security’s there just to make sure that everyone is safe and that no lines are crossed.
"In Bolton there were seven security guards, and they kept an especially close eye on Ali and Vicky. The devotion to Swarla is off the scale. Corrie bosses have never seen anything like it."
