Lisa Faulkner has been practicing her lines for Single White Female alongside her husband John Torode.

The 53-year-old actress is returning to the stage for the first time in over 20 years in the adaptation of the 1992 film and has been learning the script with the help of her former MasterChef presenter spouse.

Lisa told HELLO! magazine: "He's been running through the lines with me. He's so happy for me."

The former Holby City star – who co-hosts ITV's John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen with her partner – added: "He's my husband and my best mate. We really do support each other and hold each other's hands through everything. He's such a gentleman and so kind."

Lisa stars opposite Kym Marsh in the UK tour of Single White Female – which gets underway at Brighton's Theatre Royal this week – and is excited to be working with the ex-Coronation Street star.

She said: "I think we'll have fun. I'm really looking forward to playing Allie, and playing that slightly psycho character will be great for Kym. I think she'll do it brilliantly.

"We've met a couple of times and my best friend, Angela Griffin, has worked with her. Angela said: 'You're going to get on like a house on fire; she's lovely.'"

The play is a reimagining of the erotic psychological thriller and Lisa was keen to work on the project as soon as she read the script.

She explained: "It reads really fast and like a film, so I was excited about it. I remember watching (the film) and thinking it was brilliant; I loved Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

"What's exciting is that (scriptwriter) Rebecca Reid has brought it up to date. It's in the world of social media and they're older. It's funny; the people who were my age when we watched it are all mums with late-teen daughters (now)."

Lisa's stage return comes as she is trying to embrace life in her 50s, particularly as her mother Julie passed away from throat cancer aged just 44.

The Missing You star said: "I feel lucky to get to an age where you've got more to give and you're not invisible. Women are brilliant and we're picking each other up and looking out for each other.

"Life's short. My mum died when she was 44 and didn't get to have that second act. So I grab it."
