Anushka Sharma used to think she was “pretty” until Aditya Chopra told her otherwise when she made her film debut.

Anushka Sharma used to think she was “pretty” until Aditya Chopra told her otherwise.
The 35-year-old Bollywood star made her debut in ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ alongside Shah Rukh Khan but alleged that fillmaker Aditya told her she would have to work “extra hard” because she was lacking in looks.
Speaking on ‘Koffee with Karan’, she said: “He said I have a lot of belief in your talent. He said ‘I think you are a very talented actress but I don’t think you are very good looking, you’re not the most good looking girl so you have to make sure that you work really hard!’
“Till I met Aditya Chopra, I used to think I’m very very good looking. That yeah, even I can look like this (top female actors), if I have the right hair and make-up.”
Anushka – who since making her debut in 2008 has gone on to a successful career in Bollywood with roles in films such as ‘Zero’ and will soon be starring as cricketer Jhulan Goswami in ’Chakda Express’ – went on to add that upon seeing herself on camera for the first time when shooting her debut movie, she initially believed that Aditya had been “right” with his comments about her looks.
She said: “When I saw myself on the monitor for the first time while shooting, the first day I saw myself on the screen, I was like he is right!”
Anushka’s friend and fellow Bollywood star Rani Mukeriji has also remarked that she can remember seeing a “spark” at her audition for the 2008 movie even though she was not “drop dead gorgeous”.
She told India Today Unforgettables: “I remember seeing your audition and saying look at the spark that this girl has. You weren’t the prettiest girl. Looking at you, I wouldn’t say that you were drop dead gorgeous but there was something in your performance, something in your personality that was so vibrant and so lovely!”
