Six days at University Medical Center

Tupac fought for his life for six days at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where doctors removed his right lung in a desperate bid to stop internal bleeding.

On Friday, September 13, 1996, at 4:03 PM, the rap titan succumbed to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest at just 25 years old.

Fearing a media circus and security chaos, his mother, Afeni Shakur, cancelled all planned public services. Tupac was cremated the very next day, leading his rap group, The Outlawz, to famously take his Black Jesus lyrics literally by mixing a portion of his ashes with marijuana and smoking them during a private beachside memorial.
