Jay Sean
Before breaking into the US charts with Down in 2009, Jay Sean was already a major star in the UK’s British-Asian music scene. Born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti to Punjabi Sikh parents in London, he was one of the first Indian-origin artists to achieve mainstream pop success in the West.
Jay is very proud of his Indian heritage.
He told the BBC: "When I started off there were close to zero South Asians in mainstream music and I found it quite lonely."
After growing tired of the lack of representation in the South Asian community, Jay partnered with Virgin Records and launch his music label 3AM Entertainment last year.
He said: “I’m just so proud to be able to provide a platform where we can sign artists from a South Asian background who never really had a chance to shine without some struggle or without being understood."
