A star is born

Julie Andrews was born in Walton-on-Thames, England, and displayed an extraordinary vocal talent from an early age. Her stepfather discovered she had perfect pitch, and she began performing publicly as a child.

She recalled: “I had this freakish voice." By her teens, she was already singing operatic arias, hinting at the career that lay ahead.
