Ben Stiller recalled reading the Jim Carrey version of the script, deeming it “much more physically oritented” than what eventually made its way to the screen.

He said: “The toilet’s overflowing, and my character sits on it to stop it. I read that and said, ‘No way I’m gonna be funny doing that.’”

Stiller’s instincts helped reshape the comedy into something smarter.
