Writing evolution

Over the course of the movie’s development, the screenplay for Meet the Parents was reshaped several times.

Originally, Jim Herzfeld completed a draft in 1996 before John Hamburg was brought in to adapt it further.

Hamburg adjusted the humour to suit Ben Stiller’s awkward charm and Robert De Niro’s deadpan intensity.
