Noah and Allie are based on a real couple

The flick stars Ryan Gosling as Noah and Rachel McAdams as Allie.

The two lovers have an intense relationship with a heart-breaking end that leaves viewers weeping as the elderly couple (James Garner is old Noah and Gena Rowlands is old Allie) end up dying peacefully in each other's arms.

The film is based on Nicholas Spark's book and is actually about his ex-wife Cathy's grandparents and the story of how they met.
