Sandie Shaw - Puppet on a String
At the 12th Eurovision Song Contest in 1967, the UK landed its first victory with Sandie Shaw’s ‘Puppet on a String’, which collected more than double the points of the second-placed entry.
It then topped the UK charts for three weeks and was a number one smash all over the world.
Surprisingly, Shaw was not a huge fan of the track herself, saying: "I hated it from the very first oompah to the final bang on the big bass drum. I was instinctively repelled by its sexist drivel and cuckoo-clock tune."
However, the British public clearly do love it and perhaps Shaw has now warmed to it too, as in 2007 she released a re-recording.
