Extra-terrestrial difficulties

Executive producer Steven Spielberg and director Barry Sonnenfeld would frequently disagree over the designs of the aliens, which made makeup artist Ricker Baker's life incredibly complicated.

He recalled: "It was like, 'Steven likes the head on this one and Barry really likes the body on this one, so why don't you do a mix and match?' And I'd say, 'Because it wouldn't make any sense."

However, all of the blood, sweat and tears was worth it, as the film won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling – the franchise's only Academy Award.
