Oscar glory and controversy
‘The Godfather’ is rightly considered to be one of the best movies of all time, and was certainly treated as such at the Academy Awards.
The flick was nominated in multiple categories at the Oscars, and took home three accolades for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Marlon Brando and the coveted Best Picture prize.
However, Brando famously did not attend the ceremony and rejected the statuette to make a political statement.
Upon taking to the stage, the actor’s representative Sacheen Littlefeather - who attended in full Apache attire and is pictured - said: “I’m representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to that he cannot accept this very generous award because of the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry.”
