In the years after Melissa's initial TV stint starring in 'Clarissa Explains It All', she had planned to go to college until her mom Paula (pictured) was handed an Archie Comics book in a playground and decided it would be the perfect vehicle for her daughter. She secured the rights and sold the idea to ABC for a TV movie before the idea was greenlit for a full series.
