Michael claimed in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey that his father Joe physically and verbally abused him as a child in an effort to "allow him to improve."

Michael claimed that Joe would beat him if made mistakes when rehearsing the Jackson 5's dance routines and when singing.

The violence, plus the repetitive infidelities behind his mother Katherine's back meant that Michael and Joe never had a good relationship, so much so that the 'Bad' singer did not include his dad in his will.
