The 'Handmaid's Tale' author was accused of holding anti-trans views when she read an article claiming that "people" can menstruate and immediately questioned what had happened to the term "women".

She tweeted: "Why can’t we say 'woman' anymore? Society is in danger of entering an outer orbit of linguistics where both women, as a gender, and 'woman' as a noun are being blotted out!"
