Jamie Lynn Spears has reflected on the "bittersweet" moment of her daughter graduating high school.

The 35-year-old actress was just 17 years old when she gave birth to her eldest child Maddie - who she has with ex-boyfriend Casey Aldridge - and now the teenager is the same age and preparing to leave school, the Zoey 101 star has looked back on the ups and downs of motherhood and how grateful she is to have experienced them.

Sharing a series of photos of Maddie, now 17, over the years, Jamie Lyn wrote on Instagram: "Welp….the grad invites are sent, the cap and gown arrived, and the last regular day of school is here….I guess the lovely state of denial that I forced myself to be in has to end, bc the reality of time is coming at me like a freight train.

"I know the saying “the days are long, but the years are short” is one of the most cliche sayings, bc it’s said so much, but I now know that cliches are only said so much bc they continue to ring true in every lifetime throughout the test of time.

"Maybe, people only hate cliches, bc they are the undeniable, unavoidable truth hitting us right in the face, and if you’re fortunate enough, kids growing up is one of those few guarantees in life. Unlike some other guarantees in life (taxes + death), having the privilege of watching your children grow up is one of the most beautiful + fulfilling things we can experience as humans, and I am so grateful for each every up _ down moment throughout the journey of motherhood this far.

"It’s bittersweet, bc you’re so proud of everything they have accomplished this far, and so excited to watch everything that their future will bring, while also longing for them to stay your baby forever.

"I know I’m one of luckiest mama’s in the world, so I’ll stop my rambling now, until I completely lose it on graduation day. I’ll leave ya with another cliche, go love on your babies, and really REALLY try to be present, no matter what else is going on in your professional or personal life, bc you will NEVER regret spending time with your kids. The Sweet Magnolias actress - who also has eight-year-old Ivey with husband Jamie Watson - admitted she had been feeling emotional so turned to ice cream for comfort.

She concluded: "Also, it’s all about the little things, like today, I had a scoop of coffee ice cream for breakfast, I’ll probably have it for lunch too, bc tears + ice cream is an unbeatable duo.(sic)"
