The White House has confirmed Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final, after the US President missed the first 102 games of the tournament, including USA's five matches.
Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final, after missing the first 102 games of the tournament.
The US President didn't attend any of USA's five matches at the 2026 tournament - which has been jointly hosted by America, Canada and Mexico - but he will be at the finale on Sunday (19.07.26) to see Argentina take on Spain at the MetLife Stadium, which has been known as New York New Jersey Stadium during the World Cup.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: "We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending.
"This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage."
Trump is also expected to hand over the trophy to the winning team's captain.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently confirmed he wants to give out the silverware alongside the POTUS.
He told Swiss pay-TV sports platform Blue Sport: "Hopefully we'll present the trophy together in the final.
"That's always been the plan, and that's how it's always been done in the past - the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the FIFA president."
Infantino also revealed Trump has watched some World Cup games on TV, and said he has "really enjoyed" the spectacle.
He explained: "We're in touch regularly. Almost every day - he's happy and really enjoys the tournament.
"He watches all the games on TV."
But the Swiss football administrator admitted there would be too much scrutiny on Trump if he had attended several matches.
He explained: "I suppose he still has a few other things to do ... and when he’s at the stadium, people will ask, 'What’s he doing at the stadium when there’s so much going on in the world'
"I’m always in touch with him and his government, which is doing a great job with the World Cup."
At the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the emir of the country, awarded the trophy to Argentina captain Lionel Messi alongside Infantino.
