Frankie Dettori is "very sore" in hospital following a horror car crash.

The 55-year-old legendary jockey was rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, after he "sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb" when his Smart Car spun across the road and flipped onto its roof, after another vehicle smashed into the rear passenger side of Frankie's car on the A1304, London Road, near Six Mile Bottom in Newmarket, West Sussex, South East England, on Wednesday evening (01.07.26).

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said no arrests were made, adding: "Both drivers were taken to hospital as a precaution and an investigation is on-going for traffic-related offences."

Frankie - who retired from horse racing in February - took to Instagram on Thursday (02.07.26) to thank fans for their "kind messages and support" following the crash.

He posted a shot of himself lying in a hospital bed with his wife, Catherine, at his bedside, with the caption: "Thank you, everyone, for your kind messages and support. A huge thank you as well to the fantastic emergency staff who looked after me.

"I’m very sore and have a few broken ribs, so I’ll be taking some time to rest and recover. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

"Frankie x (sic)."

Fans wished the three-time flat racing Champion Jockey a speedy recovery in the post's comments section.

One penned: "Get well soon Frankie! Sending love and strength."

A second supporter typed: "Heal well Frankie! Send positive vibes."

And a third follower wrote: "Best wishes mate, get well soon."

In a statement on Thursday, H Talent Management confirmed Frankie was involved in a car crash and had been taken to hospital.

It read: "H Talent Management can confirm that Frankie Dettori was involved in a road traffic accident in Newmarket on the evening of Wednesday, 1st July.

"Another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Frankie was driving, causing it to spin and flip.

"Frankie was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb. His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observation.

"Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him.

"His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie’s privacy is respected at this time.

"No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update."

It is not the first time Frankie has been involved in a vehicle crash.

In 2000, he survived a light aircraft crash that claimed the life of pilot Patrick Mackey, after the aircraft burst into flames shortly after it took-off from Newmarket before it crashed back to the ground.

Frankie, who suffered a broken ankle and a damaged thumb, was pulled out of the wreckage by his pal and fellow jockey, Ray Cochrane, 69, who also survived the plane crash.
