Frankie Dettori is "very relieved" his car accident was not worse.

The 55-year-old jockey - who took part in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2023 - was involved in an horrific car crash last week, which left him with four broken ribs and a fractured thumb.

Fortunately, Frankie has now been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home alongside his family.

The former Celebrity Big Brother star is thankful the smash, which occurred in Newmarket, West Sussex, South East England, on July 1st when his Smart Car spun across the road and flipped onto its roof, wasn't more serious.

In a statement released by his management company H Talent Management, Dettori said: "I am very relieved that it was not worse. I have had injuries before in my career, but broken ribs are never easy and the only real answer is rest and time.

"I want to thank the emergency services and everyone at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for the care they gave me. They were excellent. I am also very grateful for all the messages and calls I have received since the accident."

Dettori recently signed up to ride in the Leger Legends charity race at Doncaster in September, which will be his first ride in Britain since 2023.

Despite his car accident, Frankie's management admitted he remains "hopeful" of riding in the race.

Following the smash, Frankie admitted he was "very sore".

He wrote on Instagram: "Thank you, everyone, for your kind messages and support. A huge thank you as well to the fantastic emergency staff who looked after me.

"I’m very sore and have a few broken ribs, so I’ll be taking some time to rest and recover. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

"Frankie x (sic)."

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said no arrests were made, adding: "Both drivers were taken to hospital as a precaution and an investigation is on-going for traffic-related offences."

H Talent Management confirmed Frankie had been involved in a car crash and had been taken to hospital.

It read: "H Talent Management can confirm that Frankie Dettori was involved in a road traffic accident in Newmarket on the evening of Wednesday, 1st July.

"Another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Frankie was driving, causing it to spin and flip.

"Frankie was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb. His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observation.

"Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him.

"His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie’s privacy is respected at this time.

"No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update."
