Actress/musician Teyana Taylor has revealed she's formed a "close bond" with her idol Janet Jackson - calling the pop superstar a "beautiful spirit".

The 35-year-old actress/musician was a huge fan of the pop superstar, 59, when she was growing up and they were introduced via a surprise video call after Teyana missed her chance to attend one of Janet's concerts in 2017 when her flight was cancelled. They went on to meet in 2022 when Janet came to see Teyana perform in London and the music star has revealed they've become good friends over the last few years.
Speaking about their initial introduction, Teyana told PEOPLE: "I was in Cleveland trying to make it to her show in Chicago and my flight was canceled. [I mentioned it on social media and] she FaceTimed me! I had my Janet shirt on that I'd slept in and everything. Of course I cried."
Teyana went on to reveal she now turns to Janet convinced her to return to music after she walked away from the industry in 2020.
She said: "When I first retired from music she poured into me and gave me some really good advice. She played a big part in why I came back."
The One Battle After Another star added of their friendship: "It's kind of crazy because now she's like my homegirl in real life. I call her Jan.
"She's one of those beautiful spirits. But even though we've grown a close bond, I'm still a fan. I don't take it for granted."
Teyana recreated one of Janet's most famous looks in her shoot for PEOPLE's World’s Most Beautiful issue and she earned the pop legend's approval.
In a video filmed for the publication, Janet said: "Wow, I just have to say wow, Tey. You did it - you captured it; you captured the energy, the mood. If only I had looked that beautiful.
"I mean, the outfit - so gorgeous, honey, it's absolutely stunning. And on top of that, I'm honored. I'm really honored, Tey. Thank you so much. I love it, absolutely love it."
Teyana's look featured a cream military-style jacket inspired by a costume Janet wore on stage during her Janet World Tour in the mid-1990s.
