Jennie Garth has vowed to take the "best possible care" of herself because she is "so scared" of dying.
The 54-year-old Beverly Hills, 90210 star has embraced a vegan diet "on and off for years" and she admits cutting out meat and diary is in part due to concerns about her health because she is terrified about being struck down by a terrible illness after experiencing so much "loss" in her life.
During an appearance on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, she explained she was initially put off eating meat after being raised on a farm. Jennie said: "I grew up on a farm in Illinois where my dad would kill our pigs for the dinner table and I never loved that but I ate pork chops because I was told to.
"And then I got to a point where I was like: 'No one's telling me what to eat anymore'. So when I was away from the home, I would eat Lucky Charms [cereal] and Taco Bell constantly. 'Cos I was like: 'Woohoo freedom!' from my mom who only let us eat healthy things."
However, Jennie ditched her unhealthy eating habits and the mother-of-three now tries to take good care of her body after losing so many loved ones, including her Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty, who passed away in July 2024 at the age of 53.
She explained: "Now as an adult, I feel like at this phase of my life I just want to take the best possible care I can of myself. I'm so scared of dying.
"When you have sudden loss around you, unexpected, out of nowhere loss, it just happened again this last week and you really go: 'Whoah, priorities'. Like I want to take the best care of myself. I can and I love it. I love feeling clean and healthy and waking up clear."
Talking about her veganism, Jennie admitted she did start eating meat when she was pregnant with her children as she craved McDonald's Chicken McNuggets.
She said: "I really don't eat much, I've never been a foodie so that's helpful I've been [vegan] on and off for years and years but I went off of it when I had kids because I was eating for them, I was eating chicken and stuff ... You've got to give them what they want. I wanted Chicken McNuggets."
