Jennifer Lawrence claims she lost out on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood role as she wasn't 'pretty enough'
Jennifer Lawrence says she missed out on playing Sharon Tate to Margot Robbie in Quentin Tarantino's movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood after being deemed too "ugly" by observers.
Jennifer Lawrence claims she missed out on a role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to Margot Robbie because she wasn't "pretty enough".
The 35-year-old actress explained that director Quentin Tarantino wanted her to play the tragic Sharon Tate in the 2019 film but she ended up losing out on the role to the Barbie star after critics deemed her too "ugly" to portray the actress and wife of Roman Polanski, who was murdered by members of the Manson Family cult in 1969.
Jennifer told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: "Well, he did, and then everybody was like, 'She's not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate.'
"I'm pretty sure it's true, or it's that thing where I've been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it. No, but I'm pretty sure that happened.
"Or he was just never considering me for the part, and the internet just, like, went out of their way to call me ugly."
Sharon's sister Debra Tate revealed prior to the movie's release that she felt Margot should get the part instead of Jennifer because of her "physical beauty".
She said: "They are both extremely accomplished actresses, but I would have to say my pick would be Margot. Simply because of her physical beauty and the way she carries herself - it's similar to that of Sharon.
"I don't think as much about Jennifer Lawrence - not that I have anything against her. She's just, I don't know, she's not pretty enough to play Sharon. That's a horrible thing to say, but I have my standards."
Meanwhile, Lawrence recently confessed that she never watches her own movies.
Speaking to Leonardo DiCaprio for Variety, the Die My Love star said: "No [I don't watch my own films].
"I’ve never made something like Titanic - if I did, I would watch it.
"Once I was really drunk, I put on American Hustle. I was like, I wonder if I’m good at acting? I put it on, and I don’t remember what the answer is."
Jennifer explained that she learned a lot about acting by working with director David O. Russell - whom she collaborated with on the films American Hustle and Joy.
The Oscar-winning star said: "He taught me how to act, really.
"I want to be sensitive to the other actors who’ve worked with him. I know he’s tough. He can be really, really hard on people. For me, I don’t know if it was because I grew up doing sports, and so I felt like he was just a stern coach. 'Do it loud,' 'Do it quieter,' 'That was b*******,' 'That was bad,' 'Do it better.' He was very straightforward with me."
