Simon Cowell's fiancee Lauren Silverman explains name change
Simon Cowell's fiancee Lauren Silverman has explained why she took his last name before their marriage - revealing it was a birthday gift to him and it "just feels right".
Simon Cowell's fiancee Lauren Silverman changed her name as a birthday gift for him.
The couple have been together since 2012, welcoming a son named Eric in 2014 and getting engaged on Christmas Eve in 2021 during a vacation in Barbados - but it's been revealed that Lauren has since changed her last name to Cowell and she signed the paperwork on her partner's 65th birthday in 2024.
In new Netflix documentary Simon Cowell: The Next Act, Lauren explained she kept her ex-husband Andrew Silverman's last name for the sake of their son Adam but she decided to change it once he turned 18 last year, saying: "I kept it for him ... [But] I don’t really want to have my ex-husband’s last name anymore."
When explaining her decision to change her last name to Cowell prior to their marriage, she added: "That just feels right for now. Not ‘for now,’ but I mean now, forever!"
The documentary features footage of Lauren signing the paperwork on Simon's big birthday last year and she joked to her partner about putting the documents into a gift box for him. She added: "That’s part of your birthday gift, me taking your name."
Lauren debuted her new name on an Instagram account she launched last year and it prompted rumours suggesting the couple had tied the knot in secret.
Simon previously opened up about the name change in an interview for Us Weekly‘s Just Like Us video series, saying: "When we decide to [wed), it will be private.
"But obviously, you know, the fact that she talks about changing her name, etc. I mean, it’s quite obvious where all this is leading to.
"It was kind of good, I think, to put it out there because people have speculated, but we have a very, very close bond, me and Lauren. I adore her, and we are a very happy family."
Simon also spoke about Lauren's decision to appear in the film, admitting her scenes were hilarious. He said: "The funny thing about her is that she is identical on the show as she is in real life. When I was watching the show back, I was absolutely cracking up at some of the scenes."
