Haley Lu Richardson mistakenly thought she was going to be with Brett Dier forever but explains how she has managed to adjust to life as a single woman.
Haley Lu Richardson mistakenly thought she was going to be with Brett Dier forever.
The 28-year-old actress got engaged to 'Jane the Virgin' star Brett, 33, in 2018 after six years of dating but revealed in 2022 that they had called it quits two years earlier and has now admitted it has been "amazing" to figure out that she can cope on her own.
She told People: "It was hard, but I got through it—that’s important and what matters. I was in a really long relationship. I spent a lot of life with someone, and it was very special. I thought it could be forever, but it wasn’t. I had thought the whole time we were together that if it wasn’t going to be forever, my life would just stop. The perspective of time to be able to be like, ‘Wow, I got through that, and I was capable of getting through something like that, and I’m capable of being on my own. That’s been an amazing thing to learn."
The 'White Lotus' star went on to add to acknowledge that single life has affected all aspects of her life in the "best way" but joked that she hoped that the way she was speaking wasn't coming across as a TED Talk on the "emotional growth" that can follow a breakup.
She added: "Once you do it, and once you start feeling how it’s totally affecting, in the best ways, every single aspect of your life, it becomes a part of your life. I hope this doesn’t come across like I’m giving a TED Talk on therapy and emotional growth."
The actress first revealed that she and Brett had split up towards the end of 2022 and explained why she had waited so long to tell the world.
She wrote on Instagram: "We actually separated two years ago. But life goes on and we are both existing and doing pretty well turns out.
"We shared a deeply special chunk of our lives together. I'm so glad to have had the last couple years to heal and grow without the internet knowing but we kinda wanted to share it and move on now. Love yourselves! Life is life babes!"
