Channel 4 ‘cancels’ Renovation Rescue as DIY shows take a hit
The broadcaster has reportedly scrapped its home makeover programme after two series.
Channel 4 has reportedly pulled the plug on Renovation Rescue.
The apparent move comes despite the home makeover series boasting Hollywood backing from Reese Witherspoon and a presenting lineup that included Stacey Solomon, Vogue Williams and former Love Island contestant Luke Mabbott.
The reported decision comes as British broadcasters reconsider their home improvement programming, following news that the BBC's long-running DIY SOS, fronted by Nick Knowles, will be rested after 27 years.
Renovation Rescue first aired in 2024 with Stacey, 37, presenting, before returning for a second series earlier this year with Vogue, 41, and Luke, 31, taking over hosting duties.
A television insider told The Sun: “Renovation Rescue had a lot going for it– with some big names fronting it and a big name backing it.
“But it seems that home-improvement shows – even when helping people in dire need of assistance – are not quite what they were.”
The programme followed homeowners whose renovation projects had gone badly wrong, bringing in experts to rescue unfinished or troubled building work and help families complete their properties.
Its reported cancellation is particularly notable because of the involvement of Hello Sunshine, the production company founded by Oscar-winning actor Reese, 50, whose Hollywood career includes Legally Blonde, Walk the Line and the television drama Big Little Lies.
Reese has also starred alongside Jennifer Aniston in Apple TV+'s The Morning Show, while Hello Sunshine has become associated with female-led television and film projects.
For Stacey, Renovation Rescue represented another move into lifestyle television after establishing herself as a household name through The X Factor, Loose Women and the BBC's Sort Your Life Out.
The presenter has built a substantial following through her family life and home improvement projects, regularly sharing domestic transformations and organizational ideas with her social media audience.
Vogue, who also appeared on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2025, brought a background in construction design and quantity surveying to the programme, while Luke contributed his experience as a trained heating and plumbing engineer.
Luke's renovation of a disused 19th-century chapel in Cornwall also featured in the second series, with the September finale documenting his efforts to transform the building into a modern home.
The reported cancellation follows Channel 4's unsuccessful revival of Changing Rooms, which returned in 2021 but ended after two series.
Meanwhile, the BBC has confirmed that DIY SOS, presented by Nick Knowles, will be rested in 2027 as part of efforts to reduce spending.
However, the corporation has stressed the programme has not been permanently cancelled, announcing a replacement series, DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, which will revisit families helped by the original show.
A BBC spokesperson said: “In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore.”
The decision forms part of the broadcaster's wider £500 million savings programme, which has also affected Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind and Live at the Apollo.
Other established makeover formats have undergone changes over the years, including the gardening programme Ground Force, while Netflix's Queer Eye has also reached its final season.
