Joe Lycett thinks his real life persona will surprise people on Celebrity Traitors
The Celebrity Traitors star Joe Lycett has opened up about the idea of showing more of his real personality on the BBC show.
Joe Lycett thinks people will be "suspicious" seeing his real personality on The Celebrity Traitors.
The 38-year-old star is entering the iconic Scottish castle for the latest spinoff series of the BBC's beloved game show, and he admitted people after often surprised to learn more about his life behind the scenes.
He told the BBC: "I think the comics know what I'm like on and off stage, but I think the others who, for the first time, will spend time with me not in ‘show mode’ might see that as suspicious.
"I definitely come across assumptions of ‘oh, he's the gay comedian off the telly’ and I explain I've got a female partner and a son with said female partner.
"I’m really quite a tranquil individual when not in performance mode which may surprise some."
Joe explained that early in his stand-up career, there wasn't much difference between his "on and off-stage persona".
He said: "I showed off at parties because I wanted attention and then, gradually, as I got that attention through doing stand-up, I could calm down in real life.
"When I’m not out on stage I’m very calm, thoughtful and peaceful."
Joe is part of a star-studded cast for the second series of Celebrity Traitors, including the likes of Bella Ramsay, Romesh Ranganathan, Professor Hannah Fry, Miranda Hart, James Blunt and Richard E Grant.
He's a huge fan of the show, and described the original show as "phenomenally good television", which was only "bettered" by the celeb version.
He revealed: "That first year I sent a DM on Twitter, which was not responded to, to Studio Lambert to ask if they could send me all the rushes.
"I just was so hit by it and wanted more. I am just thrilled to be part of the universe of The Traitors and to have been asked.
"I have no idea how to play it. I don't think you can particularly. I think you just have to let it play itself a little bit."
Whether Joe ends up winning or losing, he has a clear idea of how he wants his game to go.
Asked which role he's most keen on, he said: "Both. I want to start as a Faithful and then be converted.
"I think I’d find it very stressful being a Traitor, but I think you only get one chance to have a go at it, don't you?"
The Celebrity Traitors returns to BBC One on October 1.
