BLACKPINK star Jennie needs time to 'reset'
Music star Jennie has reflected on the challenges of fame and success.
Jennie has learned the value of giving herself time to "reset".
The 30-year-old star rose to prominence as a member of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK, which debuted in August 2016, but Jennie now admits that she worked herself too hard during her younger years.
The singer - who was born and raised in South Korea - told Interview magazine: "I think I’ve learned that I really need to listen to my body and give myself time to reset.
"Sometimes that means working out or jumping in a sauna, but honestly, sometimes it’s just being at home, lying in bed, watching movies, and doing absolutely nothing. Spending time with my friends and family helps a lot too. Those little moments where I can just relax and not be traveling are what keep me grounded and give me the energy to go back onstage."
Jennie subsequently explained how her attitude has evolved over time.
The chart-topping star shared: "It’s definitely something I had to learn. I used to feel like I always had to keep going, and I wasn’t very good at recognizing when I needed to slow down.
"Over time, I’ve become much more aware of what my body and mind need. I’ve also learned that resting doesn’t mean I’m doing nothing. It’s part of taking care of myself so I can come back feeling more present and give my best when I’m working."
Jennie previously admitted that she suffered from burnout after working "non-stop" for three years.
She told Rolling Stone magazine: "For three years after debuting, we worked non-stop without resting.
"Our sleep systems were breaking down; we weren’t eating properly; I wasn’t hydrating myself - we did that for three to four years, and then started our tour. We were on tour for a year and a half. For a year and a half I didn’t have a home."
BLACKPINK's relentless schedule ultimately took a toll on Jennie's health and wellbeing.
She shared: "If I touched something I’d have an allergic reaction. I had no immune system at all, but we needed to keep touring.
"When the tour was done, we got some time off to be at home. Back then, I didn’t have time to learn how to take care of myself. I’m a very delicate person."
