Sir David Suchet joins David Mitchell in Ludwig Christmas special
Poirot icon Sir David Suchet is joining Ludwig as a suspect in David Mitchell's murder mystery comedy.
Sir David Suchet is joining David Mitchell for a Ludwig Christmas special.
The 80-year-old legend, who is best known for playing Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot from 1989 to 2013, will play a murder suspect in a festive episode of the BBC's cosy crime comedy drama.
Suchet said: "It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside David Mitchell and the wonderful ensemble cast.
"It made quite the refreshing change to be playing a suspect rather than the detective, and to sit comfortably in my armchair while David delivered the denouement.
"I had a thoroughly enjoyable time.”
The hour long special will see John 'Ludwig' Taylor (Mitchell), Lucy Betts-Taylor (Anna Maxwell Martin) and Henry Betts- Taylor (Dylan Hughes) arriving at a remote Christmas themed hotel.
They want a "much-needed escape", but "a sudden blackout turns the festivities into a locked-room murder mystery".
The BBC teased: "Trapped by a blizzard and cut off from the outside world, the guests must spend the night with a killer in their midst.
"With John reluctantly pulled into one of his strangest puzzles yet, the race is on for the Taylors to solve the crime before Christmas."
Mitchell, 52, added: "I have long been a huge admirer of Sir David Suchet’s work and have watched every episode of Poirot several times, so it was a dream come true for me when he agreed to appear in the Ludwig Christmas Special.
"He was an absolute joy to work and spend time with - funny, interesting and generous - and his performance in the programme is wonderful."
The announcement of the Christmas special, which airs later this year, comes with series two currently airing on BBC One and iPlayer, with a third series already in production.
Mitchell, Maxwell Martin and Hughes return alongside Dipo Ola as DCI Russell Carter, and a whole host of guest stars.
As well as Sir David Suchet, the festive special boasts appearances from Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Alexandra Roach, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Cathy Tyson, Rebekah Staton, Ariella Glaser, Claire Price and George Rainsford.
The first three episodes of series 2 of Ludwig are already available on BBC iPlayer, with episodes four to six following from September 10.
Episodes are being released every Thursday at 9pm on BBC One, while the Christmas special is part of the series 2 commission.
