Frances Barber is set to join the Coronation Street cast.

The 68-year-old actress - who has enjoyed a hugely successful career on stage and screen - has joined the long-running ITV soap, after being cast as a relative of Bernie Winter.

A Coronation Street insider told The Sun newspaper: "With her pedigree, bagging Frances is a huge coup for Corrie bosses.

"She’s an iconic actress who steals every scene she’s in.

"It’s only a guest role for now but who knows what could happen in the future."

Frances has starred in a string of well-known TV shows during her career, including Doctor Who, Cold Feet, Friday Night Dinner and Benidorm.

The actress also made a brief appearance in Casualty in 2019.

Frances' career on stage and screen has taken her all over the world, but the soap star previously admitted that she relishes being in the UK.

The actress told the Guardian newspaper: "The simpler things make me the happiest – not the razzmatazz – they’re the most beautiful moments I’ve experienced.

"It’s going for a walk with someone you love. It’s lying on a sofa by the fire watching a movie with my dog lying on my feet, eating cheese and onion crisps. My bulldog was so spoilt he would only eat cheese and onion Pringles; he wouldn’t touch any others.

"Being at home makes me happy. I’m a home bird. I love, love, love London and I love going home.

"Britain is a really special country and you don’t appreciate it when you’re there all the time; when you’re away you realise what a good place it is.

"I did a voiceover the other day from Los Angeles, where I’m currently working, and I was linked up to a studio in London. They told me they were having carrot cake and might be having some mulled wine later, and asked if I was having a bacon sandwich. I laughed and said, no, it’s all egg-white omelettes. The chances of finding a bacon sandwich here are pretty remote."
