The Celebrity Traitors bosses were "quite shocked" by a never before seen twist for the new series.

The BBC show, which sees players cast as either the Faithfuls or the Traitors in a game of bluff and deceit, has just wrapped filming for its second celebrity spinoff, and it seems the famous faces are playing a very different game this time round.

An insider told The Sun newspaper's TVBiz column: "Those working on the programme were quite shocked by the approach adopted by the core Traitors.

“They went on a recruiting spree that has never been seen on either the celebrity or the ‘civilian’ version of the show in the UK."

Last year, Alan Carr went onto win the series after he, Jonathan Ross and Cat Burns decided against trying to recruit anyone to their cause.

The source added: But on the follow-up series, all that changes. There’s a thrilling shift in the balance of power.

“Even though the whole programme is based on skullduggery, nobody thought it would reach these levels.”

Contestants lined up for the next Celebrity Traitors include Bella Ramsey, Ross Kemp, Hannah Fry, James Acaster, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally and Joe Lycett.

The line-up is rounded out by Julie Hesmondhalgh, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Michael Sheen, King Kenny, Jaya Jama, Miranda Hart, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Sebastian Croft, Sharon Rooney, Myha'la and Richard E. Grant.

The BBC game show, which is hosted by Claudia Winkleman, has increased security for the upcoming series to make sure the public doesn't find out which of the celebrities have been chosen as Traitors.

Locks have been installed in the editing suite, and staff are forbidden from talking about the show outside the building.

Last month, an insider told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “They’re saying it’s become like The Masked Singer set-up, which is shrouded in secrecy with sealed production rooms.

“Only a few people are allowed in and out.”

Meanwhile, comedian and former Strictly Come Dancing winner Bill Bailey recently claimed he was in line to host the celebrity spinoff before Claudia Winkleman ended up fronting both shows.

Bill's busy schedule meant he was unable to accept the job, and he also had to turn down Amazon Prime comedy contest Last One Laughing UK.

Appearing on Australia's Today programme, he said: "Last One Laughing, the recording, I was actually away, filming a travel documentary.

"Fun fact maybe, a little scoop for you - I was actually offered the role of hosting The Traitors, Celebrity Traitors.

"And again, I couldn't take the role because I was doing something else."
