The actor, 79, will star as Dom Framt – also known as the New York Ripper – a character first introduced but not seen onscreen in the show’s debut season.
The Paramount+ series follows Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, with the storyline teasing Framt’s emergence after a file on him is discovered by Dexter and later Detective Claudette Wallace, played by Kadia Saraf, in the vault of Leon Prater, played by Peter Dinklage.
The second season builds on that reveal, with the character described as a serial killer who once terrorised the city and now continues to taunt survivors years after his crimes.
The character was described as “a serial killer who terrorized the City years ago”.
A synopsis added: “Though no longer active as a killer, he’s found a new way to live into his infamy by continuing to taunt the survivors of his long-ago murder spree.”
Brian is no stranger to portraying infamous figures, having previously played Hannibal Lecter in the 1986 film Manhunter. On television, he is widely recognised for his role as Logan Roy in Succession, for which he received three Emmy nominations for outstanding lead actor in a drama series and won a Golden Globe in 2020.
Earlier in his career, he was nominated for an Emmy for guest actor in the sitcom Frasier and won for his portrayal of Hermann Göring in the miniseries Nuremberg.
His film credits include appearances in the Jason Bourne series alongside Matt Damon, as well as roles in X2, Troy and Coriolanus.
Dexter: Resurrection was developed by Clyde Phillips, who serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Michael C. Hall also executive producing alongside Scott Reynolds, Marcos Siega, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Veronica West, Kirsa Rein, Tanner Bean and Katrina Mathewson.
The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Counterpart Studios.
