Netflix’s new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie will premiere this summer.
With the streaming service also already renewing the series for a second season ahead of its debut, the release will be led by showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine.
Based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Netflix said the streaming service will launch on 9 July and confirmed that a second season has already been commissioned.
The project was first announced with a series order in January 2025 and reimagines Wilder’s semi-autobiographical stories about frontier life in the American west during the late 19th century.
The cast includes Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s older sister Mary, Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls – known as Pa – and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls, known as Ma.
The official description of the series states: “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical ‘Little House’ books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote eight Little House books during the 1930s and 1940s, with a ninth volume published posthumously in 1971.
The novels draw on her childhood experiences in the American Midwest and have sold more than 73 million copies worldwide.
The television adaptation is produced for Netflix by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios.
Rebecca Sonnenshine will also executive produce, alongside Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions, as well as Dana Fox and Susanna Fogel.
Directors on the series include Sarah Adina Smith, Julie Anne Robinson, Kat Candler, Erica Tremblay and Sydney Freeland.
Trip Friendly, whose company is involved in the production, is the son of Ed Friendly, who served as executive producer on the original Little House on the Prairie television series.
Rebecca said: “I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive.
“We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the ‘Little House’ books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of US and Canada scripted series, said the company had already decided to continue the drama.
She added: “We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut.
“The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come.
“With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
