Harry Hill endured a terrible ordeal when he returned from a family holiday to discover his beloved dog had died and had already been cremated.

The 61-year-old TV Burp star and his family – wife Magda and their three daughters – went on a much needed break and entrusted the care of their diabetic dog to the pooch’s breeder who knew the mutt’s many medical needs.

But upon returning home rather than be greeted by a wagging tail and lots of kisses, Harry and his family were told the pooch had gone to pet heaven.

Harry was then told that he needed to go to the vet's practice and pick up a box of ashes as his canine friend had already been cremated, and also pay the bills.

Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast, Harry revealed: “It was a very sweet dog. It was my wife's dog originally.

“And she had diabetes. So you had to give it these insulin jabs. It was quite a responsibility.

“We were nervous about going on holiday. So we left it with the breeder, this lady that knew the dog really well.

“We went to go and pick the dog up. And she said, ‘I'm afraid the dog died. I didn't want to phone you because they didn't want to spoil your holiday, but your dog died.’

“She handed us a receipt to go and pick up the ashes from the vets and charge us for the kennelling.”

Asked whether it was a diabetes-related death or something more suspicious, Harry couldn’t resist a gag.

He said: “We haven't had the results of the inquest yet. I don't think it's the vet equivalent of Quincy coming, or, you know, CSI or whatever it is."

Harry and his wife Magda owned two Jackapoos called Snowy and Wilson, and it was his spouse who taught the stand-up comic how to love dogs.

Elsewhere on the podcast, Harry revealed that his daughters, Kitty, 28, Winifred, 27, and Frederica, 21, all work in the arts industry, working as a ceramist, a painter and in the textile industry, respectively.

Harry joked that his children’s career choices are “why I have to keep working”.

He added: “Get a nine-to-five. What's wrong with that? Get a travel card.”

Harry has just launched a new video podcast.

The Harry Hill Show features celebrity guests, including Stewart Lee, Ed Gamble and Laura Smyth, as well as experts on topics such as the Big Bang, Day of the Dead and flies.
