EastEnders tackling dark AI storyline as Patrick Trueman deals with grief
EastEnders will be following a new storyline which will see Patrick Trueman become dependent on AI as he deals with the grief of losing his son Anthony Trueman.
EastEnders will be tackling a sinister storyline where Patrick Trueman becomes reliant on artificial intelligence (AI) to deal with his grief.
Following his son Anthony Trueman’s (Nicholas Bailey) death, Patrick (Rudolph Walker) will be seen becoming increasingly dependent on machine learning software to deal with his heartbreak as part of the BBC’s AI Unpacked Week in March.
The synopsis for the storyline reads: “The storyline will focus on how the AI software offers Patrick an outlet for his grief and will explore the effects this has on Patrick as his reliance on the software intensifies over the coming weeks.”
In a statement, Kate Phillips, Chief Content Officer at the BBC, said: “AI Unpacked Week builds on the BBC’s work on educating UK audiences about AI and its place in society.
“Across TV, radio and digital, we have a range of dedicated AI programming to inform and excite audiences about the rise of this new technology. From grief tech in EastEnders, to a Panorama special on the advance of robotics, to BBC Bitesize guides for teenagers.
“As we stand at the brink of a major technological revolution, the BBC will play a vital role in being a trusted destination for advice, insight, and engagement for all audiences.”
Patrick’s reliance on AI is going to intensify over the coming weeks, though details about the software he will be using has not been confirmed.
However, according to the Metro newspaper, the technology will bring Anthony “back from the dead” as an AI persona.
Just weeks after Christmas, Anthony was killed by his daughter Jasmine Fisher (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness), though her mother Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) was assumed to be responsible for the death, and so has been put behind bars.
After running away from Walford, Jasmine is to be lured back to Albert Square in next week’s episodes, where she is set to face the consequences of her actions when her grandmother Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) teams up with Chrissie Watts (Tracey-Anna Oberman) to find out the truth about Anthony’s murder.
