A TV drama about Manchester United is in the works.

The football club are said to have agreed a deal with production company Lionsgate for a series, which will focus on the "history of the club" and is expect to adopt a similar format to The Crown, spanning several decades and following the likes of club legends George Best, Sir David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

According to The Athletic, Line of Duty boss Jed Mercurio - who is a Manchester United fan- has been involved in conversations about the project, though it has not yet been confirmed if he will be involved.

The series is still in early stages and under the terms of the deal, the club would receive a guaranteed multi-million-pound payment should the programme be commissioned and subsequently picked up by a streaming platform. Revenue would then be split between Manchester United and Lionsgate.

The Premier League side were previously in discussions with Amazon Prime for an all-access documentary series that would have followed the club throughout the season, following a similar format to docuseries about the likes of rivals Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Sunderland.

However, they withdrew from the idea following their Europa League final defeat last May, with then-boss Ruben Amorim's concerns about potential interference cited as a factor.

Meanwhile, Jed is currently busy with the seventh series of Line of Duty after its return was confirmed in March.

He said in a statement: "Everyone involved in Line of Duty feels enormous gratitude to the show’s fans. We’re privileged to have had so many of you follow the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn’t be more delighted to be returning for a seventh.

"Corruption in this country is supposed to have come to an end while Line of Duty was off air so I’ve been forced to use my imagination."

Filming on the six-part series is expected to begin in Belfast in Spring 2026 and cast members Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar will all be reprising their roles.

Martin Compston said: "Line of Duty has been a job of a lifetime. Not only in terms of the show's success but the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with I now call some of my closest friends.

"I can’t wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together."
