Peter Kay turned down Netflix Phoenix Nights license request due to trigger warning - despite air fryer temptation

Netflix tempted Peter Kay with an air fryer before they asked him if they could license his early 2000s sitcom, Phoenix Nights, but the comic declined because the streaming giant would have slapped a trigger warning on it.

Peter Kay rejected Netflix's request to air Phoenix Nights because he did not want a trigger warning slapped on it.

The 52-year-old comedian said the early 2000s sitcom - which saw his alter ego Brian Potter be determined to make The Phoenix Club the best working men's club in Greater Manchester - "is not very politically correct now".

Appearing on the Capital Breakfast radio show on Friday (28.11.25), he told hosts Jordan North, 35, Chris Stark, 38, and 39 year old Sian Welby: "They got in touch with me last year because they wanted to put Phoenix Nights on Netflix.

"They rang me up and said, ‘Can we license some of your shows to put on Netflix?’ Anyway, they sent me a load of paperwork.

"Basically, it’s not very politically correct now. This was made in a time, do you know what I mean?"

Sian laughed as she chimed in: "When things were different!"

Before Peter's refusal, the streaming giant had tempted him with an air fryer.

He continued: "I just said, ‘I’m not keen on that, I don’t really want a warning before it.’ So, I just said, ‘No, I’ll leave it.’

"Anyway, they sent me an air fryer. I think that was trying to sweeten me."

Sian responded with: "What, one air fryer? That will do it."

Peter added: "Anyway, the Netflix air fryer arrived. It was a Phillips air fryer, it wasn't even a Ninja one. But I was grateful."

Elsewhere in his radio interview, the comic - who wraps up his years-long Better Late Than Never tour in 2026 - has revealed he has penned a Phoenix Nights movie.

Peter revealed: "And it’s written and it’s done. But I’m waiting for the de-aging process to come into fruition. Because the storyline involves a lot of flashbacks to the past, and I don’t want to be using really bad makeup to make people look young."

He then quipped: "Seriously, when the tour is finished, I’ve been thinking about it. I’ve been looking at the capabilities of de-aging technology."

Proceeds from Peter's 2026 stand-up tour - with arena shows in Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, Glasgow, Dublin, Birmingham, Belfast, Sheffield, Leeds and London - will be donated to 12 cancer charities.

These are Children With Cancer UK, Teenage Cancer Trust, Kidney Cancer UK, Blood Cancer UK, Bowel Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer UK, DKMS UK, Ovarian Cancer Action, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Anthony Nolan, The Brain Tumour Charity and Breast Cancer UK.
