The Fortune Hotel is reportedly set to be axed because it is expensive to make.

The ITV gameshow - which is hosted by 57-year-old comedian Stephen Mangan - saw 10 pairs of contestants travel to Grenada in the Caribbean, where they swapped briefcases to win the £250,000 prize - had just finished airing its second series.

A TV insider told The Sun newspaper's TVBiz column: "The huge sum of money involved in making the challenge show means that unless execs can find some inventive way to fund series three, it’s highly unlikely to happen.

"When you’re paying millions to launch a programme, it really needs to get the viewing figures to get any kind of return on the investment.

"Though it got a decent following, they just couldn’t justify shelling out so much moving forward. The jackpot alone was eye-watering."

However, an ITV spokeswoman said conversations are ongoing regarding the programme's future.

They said: "Another series hasn’t been confirmed at this stage, and talks are still underway regarding the show’s future.

"Both previous series are on ITVX, where the show regularly ranked among the top ten shows.

"This summer, the second series received 4.4 million streams as part of ITV’s biggest ever August."

The Fortune Hotel - which first aired in 2024 - saw 10 pairs of contestants stay at a lavish hotel, and each of them was given a briefcase.

Eight of them were empty, one contained an early check-out card - which causes the pair holding it to be eliminated from the competition - and the other contained the whopping £250,000.

The players battled it out in various tasks to guess where the jackpot prize was by switching the briefcases around.

Jo-Anne and Will won the first series of The Fortune Hotel, and Neil and Tope claimed victory in the second series - which was released in August.

In July, Stephen teased that a third series of The Fortune Hotel would have been filmed in a new country.

Appearing on an episode of the Table Manners podcast at the time, he told hosts Lennie Ware, 74, and 40 year old Jessie Ware: "We film the first series in Granada, and then we film the second series in exactly the same place.

"But I think if it goes again, we'll go to other parts of the world."
