Netflix developing a series about the Kennedy dynasty
Netflix's new historical drama will tackle the US political dynasty the Kennedys, with Michael Fassbender confirmed to star as patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr.
Netflix is planning a block-busting series delving deeply into America’s own version of royalty — the Kennedys.
The new series, aptly titled Kennedy, will chronicle the rise of one of the most powerful and tragic families in modern history, tracing their journey from privilege and ambition to political dominance and heartbreak.
Inspired by Fredrik Logevall’s Pulitzer Prize–winning biography JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956, the show promises to go beyond the familiar headlines and history books. Instead, it will delve into the "intimate truths" behind the myth — exploring the triumphs, rivalries, and tragic events that defined the Kennedy family.
The series will begin in the 1930s, long before John F. Kennedy became America’s 35th president, centering first on family patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr.
The businessman, politician, and former US ambassador to the United Kingdom will be portrayed by two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender.
Through Joe’s ambitions and the influence of his wife, Rose, viewers will be introduced to their nine children — Joseph Jr., John, Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Robert, Jean, and Edward — whose lives would come to shape an era.
Showrunner and executive producer Sam Shaw, known for Manhattan and Masters of Sex, describes the project as a blend of American history and myth.
He said: “The story of the Kennedys is the closest we have to American mythology — somewhere between Shakespeare and The Bold and the Beautiful.
"Logevall’s biography reveals the human strivings and burdens behind the myth, offering insights into how our past continues to shape our present.”
Produced with Eric Roth and directed by Thomas Vinterberg, Kennedy is positioned to be Netflix’s next prestige historical drama.
The platform says the show will "reveal the intimate lives, loves, rivalries and tragedies that shaped the most iconic dynasty in modern history".
The first season will chart the rise of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their children — especially young Jack, the rebellious son destined to make history.
Netflix, who scored a worldwide hit with The Crown – their acclaimed dramatisation of Britain’s royal family – are yet to announce a release date for Kennedy.
