Dexter creator Clyde Phillips slams cancellation of show’s Original Sin series
After fans were left devastated by the move, Dexter creator Clyde Phillips has criticised the cancellation of the show’s Original Sin series.

Dexter creator Clyde Phillips has criticised the cancellation of the show’s Original Sin series.
The 75-year-old created the prequel to the hit drama Dexter, starring Michael C Hall as its titular serial killer character, but the show was cancelled in August 2025 by Paramount, just months after it had been renewed for a second season – and he has now said the decision was made poorly and left both cast and crew in a difficult position.
Speaking on the Dissecting Dexter podcast about the finale of spin-off Dexter: Resurrection, Clyde said he had already told actors and writers they would be returning before the decision was reversed.
He added: “It was a tough phone call I got that night where they had already picked up the show. I had informed all the writers and actors, and then they unpicked it up, all while picking up Resurrection, which was no surprise. It wasn’t handled well and I’m not happy about it.”
The cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin followed shortly after Paramount’s merger with Skydance, which closed earlier in 2025.
At the time, Variety reported the new leadership team had re-evaluated the company’s slate and decided to scrap the prequel in favour of focusing resources on Dexter: Resurrection season two.
Clyde explained before the Skydance merger, Paramount had wanted to expand Dexter into a broad franchise similar to Yellowstone.
He said the plan was for him to take on a role like Taylor Sheridan, who oversees Yellowstone and its spin-offs.
Clyde had already begun mapping out a wider future for the franchise, but those ideas have now been abandoned.
But the TV creator confirmed more seasons of Dexter: Resurrection are expected to move forward.
Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection are both available to stream on Paramount Plus.
