The Housemaid author Freida McFadden's upcoming novel The Divorce has been picked up by Studiocanal.

The thriller won't hit bookshelves until May 26, but it's already been confirmed the film studio will co-produce the adaptation with Working Title following a competitive book auction.

McFadden said in a statement: “I’m delighted to be working with the teams at Studiocanal and Working Title to bring The Divorce to the big screen.

“From the start, they have come forward with an unparalleled enthusiasm and a strong vision for how to get this project off the ground. I can’t wait to see what unfolds!”

The Divorce is the third of McFadden's novels to secure the big screen treatment.

Last year, The Housemaid was released starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, while a sequel is due in December 2027 based on her book The Housemaid's Secret, with Kirsten Dunst joining the cast.

The Divorce has been described as a “razor-sharp thriller where love curdles into vengeance and survival becomes the most dangerous game of all".

The plot follows Naomi, whose "quintessential love story" is turned upside down when her husband suddenly kicks her out of the house and hires the best divorce attorneys he can.

From there, he drains their bank accounts and moves on with a new flame in their 20s.

Rather than simply moving on, Naomi becomes obsessed with her ex's new girlfriend, but the secrets she uncovers put her in grave danger.

Anna Marsh, Studiocanal CEO and chief content officer of Canal+ group, described the project as a "landmark deal" for Studiocanal Stories, which was launched in 2024 and focuses on adapting literature for the big and small screen.

She added: “We are thrilled to be working with Freida McFadden on our adaptation of The Divorce.

“From the very first page, it was utterly compelling. Freida has a rare ability to draw readers – and viewers – into an unsettling sense of comfort, before brilliantly pulling the rug from under them.

"The Divorce is ambitious, aspirational and irresistibly addictive storytelling at its best.”

Last month, author McFadden revealed her true identity as a brain doctor whose real name is Sara Cohen.

She told USA Today: "I'm at a point in my career when I'm tired of this being a secret.

"I'm tired of people debating if I'm a real person or if I'm three men. I am a real person and I have a real identity and I don't have anything to hide."
