I Will Wait: Marcus Mumford 'banned' from listening to music at home by wife Carey Mulligan
Marcus Mumford says Carey Mulligan keeps their home music‑free because he can’t hold a conversation when a song is playing.
Marcus Mumford has revealed his wife doesn't like him playing music at their home.
The Mumford and Sons frontman, 39, has spent 14 years married to Drive star Carey Mulligan, 41 - and somewhere along the way she realised her husband zones out and goes quiet when music’s playing, so the couple keep the house quiet, even when they’re hosting parties.
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, he said: “We had this conversation the other day. We had a party at home. It was Carey’s birthday, and someone came, and they were like, ‘There’s no music.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t really play music.'"
He continued: “I can’t do background music because if music’s on, I want to lean in and listen to it. And I can’t switch that part of my brain off. So then Carey doesn’t like having music in the house because I just stop having a conversation."
The I Will Wait hitmaker - who has three children with Carey - listens to music when he's alone, otherwise, he goes into analytical mode.
He said: “I listen to probably mostly new music. And if I’m on my own, that’s when I listen to music.”
In the same interview, Marcus shared how stunned he was when Kendrick Lamar stripped to "his undies" during a backstage meeting.
The musician revealed he was once summoned to the rapper's dressing room for a chat after a performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee and Marcus couldn't believe his eyes when Kendrick started stripping off as they were talking.
He recounted: "When I was invited, very explicitly invited, backstage was after Kendrick Lamar played Bonnaroo.
"There was a message that came down from on high that Kendrick would like to see you. When Kendrick calls, you come, right, because he’s the king."
He added: "He took almost all of his clothes as I walked in. It was amazing. I thought, like, the gumption to be like: 'Yeah, come on back after the show and it will be the very moment I take all my clothes off and I’m just down to my undies and we’ll have a chat'."
Marcus added: "Real confidence. Swag."
