Oppenheimer star David Krumholtz has announced he is taking an “indefinite break” from acting - because he’s so “fed up” with Hollywood.

The 48-year-old screen star, who has appeared in movies such as The Santa Clause and Supergirl, took to his Threads account on Monday (17.08.26) to explain his unscheduled hiatus to fans.

He wrote: “I kinda sorta put my acting career on hold the other day. It’s been something I’ve been petrified to do for years. “Specifically, the fear was that I’d go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game.”

David added that he then “sent the definitive email” to action the career break, after which a “huge wave of relief” washed over him.

He continued: “Not sure what I’m going to do for money instead, or how I’m going to do it, but I just removed a humongous burden, one that I truly didn’t fathom the weight of until it was gone. Frustrated, fed up, fried.”

Despite having 147 acting credits to his name, David told fans that he has spent the last 12 months “fighting for parts”, and said that the only roles he was offered were ones that would “exploit my talent and reputation for a drastically diminishing return”.

He concluded the Threads post, which has now been deleted, by writing: “Exploitative art isn’t art. And artists deserve a fair pay percentage for work that assists their employers in making profits.”

In another Threads post, which is still on the social media platform, David alleged he was told to “brand” himself on social media, in order to get “likes and follows”.

He said that the social media activity would have led to him being “considered for fan conventions and internet ads just so I can make the money that simply acting on a TV show or film or stage refuses to pay me anymore”.

David continued: “I, along with many talented folks, not just actors, are being mass demoted. Imagine you excel in your career for 34 years, just to be drastically demoted for it.

“An artist’s life is a gamble. The artist takes on the persona of a gambler. I am sick of worrying about myself, my waistline, my hairline, the superficial s**t… when I could be helping someone else.”

He went on to tell fans that while he’s still considering acting in some capacity, he won’t be “begging for parts” any more.

David - who has also appeared in movies such as 10 Things I Hate About You and TV series The Studio - called it a “goddamn shame”, but said he has to “be responsible for what I can control and change and that’s me and my heart”.

He added: “I can still act. I can act to make an impact, rather than a measly buck. And that’s my choice. And that’s exactly what I plan to do.”

David concluded: “Gotta be grateful for all I’ve been given the opportunity to accomplish, for the folks who believed in me. It’s been a breathtaking ride, truly. It’s been more than one big dream come true.

“And I slayed it. It healed a lot in me. It humbled me. I needed it. I’d be dead if I had never become an actor. I’m certain of that. And now, new life.”

Responding to one fan asking what he was thinking about doing next, David said he’s considering “[inspiring] kids in school through motivational speaking”.

He also told another of his followers that he’s “not quitting entirely” but “taking a bit of a step back and an indefinite break”. He mused: “The stress of the moment has me wondering if there’s a higher calling to pursue.”
