Insomniac Games boss slams 'relentless' criticism of Marvel's Wolverine
Insomniac Games director James Stevenson has defended the studio's upcoming title Marvel’s Wolverine after a wave of online criticism, with the studio’s community director warning that constant negativity can harm developers’ mental health.
Insomniac Games has responded to the growing criticism surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine, with one of the studio’s senior figures calling the online negativity "relentless".
James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, shared his concerns on social media after seeing the reaction to trailers and gameplay footage for the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive.
Stevenson wrote: "I think the wild way this algorithm amplifies and forces negativity upon you has me reconsidering my philosophy on telling devs to look or post here. It’s a relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone’s mental health nor representative."
Marvel’s Wolverine has faced criticism online despite being one of the most anticipated upcoming PlayStation titles.
Some fans have compared parts of the game’s visuals to older licensed superhero games, while others have argued that elements of its story appear similar to other major action games.
The title, which was first announced in 2021, is being developed by Insomniac Games, the studio behind the successful Marvel’s Spider-Man series.
It will feature Australian actor Liam McIntyre as the voice of Wolverine, taking over from Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the character in the X-Men films.
The game aims to deliver a darker and more violent take on the iconic mutant hero.
Players will follow Wolverine as he investigates his mysterious past, travelling through locations including Japan, North America and the fictional city of Madripoor.
Marvel characters including Omega Red and Mystique will also appear, with Insomniac promising a story focused on Wolverine’s brutal combat abilities and internal struggles.
The studio has previously described the project as an attempt to create the "ultimate Wolverine fantasy", while warning that the game will be significantly more mature and intense than some players may expect.
Insomniac said: "Bold, resilient, and volatile, Wolverine is a character that all of us at Insomniac are thrilled to explore."
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 15.
With the release date approaching, Insomniac appears focused on managing expectations while encouraging fans to judge the finished game rather than early online reactions.
Stevenson’s comments also highlight a wider issue facing game developers, as social media platforms increasingly amplify criticism and controversy around major releases before players have experienced them.
