The late singer publicly struggled with addiction, depression, self-harm and impulsive behaviour, all characteristics of someone with Borderline Personality Disorder. Doctors speculated that she suffered with the condition following her passing in 2011.

The Times newspaper reported: "Doctors believe she was struggling with borderline personality disorder (BPD), a serious mental illness associated with intense inner pain, mood swings and addiction."
