The 36-year-old actor will play Severus Snape in the TV series and was among 1,500 signatories of industry figures who condemned the UK supreme court ruling that judged that the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the Equality Act refer only to a biological woman and to biological sex.

The letter, which was published earlier this year, read: "We believe the ruling undermines the lived reality and threatens the safety of trans, non-binary and intersex people living in the UK."
